Jiu Jitsu in Holland

The first time I came to The Netherlands was in 2002 and Jiu Jitsu in Holland has come a long way since those times. Back then it was rare to come upon a black belt instructor around here. Nowadays there is a black belt teaching Jiu Jitsu in every major city of Holland. It is gratifying to see that many who begun their Jiu Jitsu journey with me have achieved their goal and are continuing to expand the art throughout Holland and Europe.

History of Jiu Jitsu in Holland

The first Dutch open (2002) was organized by Mathieu peters and Me (Cadu Francis) with the intention of expanding the art by making it more popular and attractive. We did a Gi and no Gi split day with a total of €2000 in prize money. We had a couple of small local sponsors but putting a tournament up was a gamble. The day was unorganized, super stressful and I even had a super fight with no time limit against the local Martijn de Jong who was known as “The Specialist” at the time.

The match lasted for about four minutes when I got him in a collar choke and he almost went out. Later there was this discussion that he didn't tap… In the end we never had a rematch.

All of this effort was well worth it. When I look back and see how much Jiu Jitsu in Holland has developed.

If you are in Europe around November you should definitely check out the Dutch Open and go train at Jiu Jitsu Factory.
